George Dunseth filed suit against the City of Santa Ana, California for battery and false arrest/imprisonment. He went to trial in his capacity as a 84 year old blind pro per before the Honorable Gregory Lewis and after several days of trial Judge Lewis non-suited George's case. Dwight Smith at Catholic Worker called me and asked if I would assist George with his appeal. I appealed his civil non-suit to the 4th Appellate District, Division 3 and shortly afterwards had George's case reversed on appeal. (Reversed in part, affirmed in part)
Isaac Ramirez was convicted under Calfornia's 3-Strikes law and sentenced
to 25 years to life in prison. Shortly after Constitutional Scholar Erwin Chemerinsky argued argued State of California v. Andrade before the United States Supreme Court. The Court ruled 5-4 that California's 3-Strikes law was not in violation of the 8th Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment. Isaac appealed his case to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and reversed his case after serving six years in prison. I had the distinct pleasure to meet Isaac about the same time that the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys were presenting him this award. Isaac put his trust in GOD and he never looked back. Isaac and I are friends to this day. May GOD continue to bless him.
